A People with Lots of History

Guatemala represents an intriguing, attractive blend for each person. This is a country with different landscapes, from tropical jungle in the lands of the Northeast, where the most important archaeological sites of the Maya culture are found ( Tikal , Motagua, among others), to the green mountains of the Altiplano (plateau) home to the different Maya communities, wearing their traditional costumes.
Located in Central America, it borders to the North with Mexico , to the Northeast with Belize and to the South with El Salvador and Honduras . Guatemala has beaches both on the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean .

The country is relatively small-sized. In its combination of cultures Guatemala has around 21 different ethnic groups: Quichés, Mams, Tzutujils and Cakchiquels, speaking 23 languages (21 of Maya origin; the other two are Garifuna and Xinca), even though Spanish is the country's official language (only 60 per cent of the population speaks it as its mother tongue). There are around 11 million people living in this country. Approximately 50 per cent of this population's ancestors are Mayan-Indigenous; the other 50 per cent have Latin-European ancestors (ladinos).

Guatemala is an example of the continuity of rites and of the numerous Mayan ethnic groups. Each group conserves its own way of life and language , that is unintelligible for the rest, be they Tzutuhiles, Quichés or Cakchiqueles. Their sacred book is the Popol Vuh.
Guatemala experienced a cruel civil war during three decades, when the army murdered over 100,000 indigenous persons, 50,000 disappeared and many more went on exile, and are now beginning to come back. An agreement between the Government and indigenous organizations has acknowledged the right each ethnic group has, to educate their children in their own language but this right is not practiced, they learn in Spanish. Therefore, one day the secrets of their race and times will not be passed on from parents to children, secrets of the wind and the mountain.
